Le Proverbe / citation choisi par Olaf Hund :
« C’est beau mais c’est loin… » – Jacques Chirac

http://www.myspace.com/olafhund
Biographie :

Mike Agent X Clark, a native Detroiter, founder of Strictly Beatdown and Beatdown sounds has worked with major dance labels such as Underground Resistance, Nite Groove, Planet E and Third Ear to name a few of them.
We are glad to share with you an exclusive new mix with unreleased tracks Mike made for us … and his interview. Enjoy!
Mike’s proverbe : Life is full of cycles, within a circle
Mike Clark Interview :
1) What are your biggest musical influences? how does it all started ?
My biggest are Herbie Hancock, Parliament Funkadelic, Roy Ayers, Gil Scott Heron, EWF, George Duke, Quincey Jones, Cameo, Martin Circus, Peter Brown,Leroy Burgess, Colonel Abrams. I used to listen to their music and harmonies and they were so inspiring to me.
2) What are you trying to convey through your music? When you’re composing and recording what feelings are you trying to invoke in listeners?
The feeling I get, strong spiritual vibrations, dance hard! Have true experience! A feeling you wont forget and want more of.
3) In most cases digital sales have overtaken vinyl sales these days. Which one do you prefer, vinyl or digital? Do you think vinyl will keep going or disappear eventually?
I don’t really have a strong preference, really. I will always love vinyl but everything is done digitally. Now in business you juggle with both : it’s evolution vs originality. I’m a product of both ! I started with turntables, cassettes and reel to reel and now it’s turntables and mp3s. Vinyl will never disappear but the fate of its usage depends on the future generation.
4) About vinyl edits, why are there so many limited editions? Is it important to make music collectible and rare?
No I really think it depends on the individual making them but also on the business. I guess what we do isn’t open enough to have a major push behind the edit to create a mass market and the original labels aren’t backing them all. It’s just a question of communication issues I guess.
5) Recent tracks or artists that you enjoyed the most ?
Right now this very second I’m feeling a track that Phil Asher sent me « Textya » a rhythm track with an African speech that’s out of the gate!
6) tell us more about the mix you have chosen to share with us.
Its a mix with a lot of great tunes that I received and that I bought.
I hope that listeners will feel the variety I put in there
7) Each radioshow we make has a proverbe, is there a proverbe you actually like and want to share with us ?
Life is full of cycles, within a circle, things repeat themselves but in a different way : ups and downs, good and bad, negative and positive. I like to think of it as well as the yin yang, the symbol of life! To understand that it is to understand life!</itunes:summary>

EXCLU : Here’s the lastest Daniel Wang track!
A little link for a big musical trip…
The Daniel’s proverbe : I knew i would cross this river one day but until this moment, i did not know that it would be today.
Daniel Wang’s Interview
1)What are your biggest musical influences ?
In learning about dance music, obviously those 10 years i spent in downtown New York taught me so so much. Listening to Danny Krivit and David Mancuso play those Salsoul and Loft classics, at empty late night parties with great sound systems… but my past 7 years in Berlin have given me maybe much more knowledge and a new sense of direction. Thereminist Pamelia Kurstin and Dr. Bob Moog gave me a much deeper understanding of instruments and harmony; and i spend much more time now listening to The Carpenters and The Singers Unlimited, and appreciating the beauty of pieces by Ravel,
Debussy, Satie. Composers like Cole Porter (jazz standards) and Rod Temperton (G.Benson, M. Jackson, Heatwave) are my heroes. Great jazz, pop music, rock or dance music are all based on universal principles of rhythm, harmony and sound production, and although i might never reach their level, these musicians inspire me.
2) What are you trying to convey through your music? When you are composing and recording what feelings are you trying to invoke in listeners?
I think the fault of many of my earlier pieces was a tendency toward minor keys and melancholy, which is not my nature, but i just ended up composing in those modes. In my new songs i try to convey more joy or tranquility or complexity. More major and minor key shifting. Most of all, probably always beauty and fascination, with colors and textures and shapes, but the feelings which they evoke up are to the listener!
3) What is your attitude or approach towards sampling?
Obviously my first records were all made from samples, because that was just normal in those days, but even then my attitude was a bit ironic. I really hate it now when people build their whole song and career on samples though. Dance music today ought to be beyond that stage. I like a great disco re-edit which respects the sound quality and song structure of the original — some classic disco can be improved or modified. But taking someone else’s idea and hardly changing it — im not concerned with the legal aspect, but the artistic and aesthetic expression — that’s just stealing, it’s stupid and boring.
4) In most cases digital sales have overtaken vinyl sales nowadays. Which one do you prefer, vinyl or digital?
I really love both!! i have digital tracks which i play constantly, the sound quality is amazing — sometimes better than the original LP pressing — and i dont have to worry about damaging the vinyl. But i notice, when i really want to « mix », overlayering beats for example, i still prefer vinyl which i can touch and hold.
5) About vinyls, why are there so many limited editions.? Is it important to make music collectable and rare?
I think great music should be as accessible as possible. All those classic jazz, funk, disco records — many sold 200,000, maybe 500,000 copies!
If it’s great music, it should be shared and owned by everyone. Music is a very democratic enjoyment in this sense. The LP you get for 10 euros at a flea market today is exactly the same copy which some millionaire bought for himself in 1981. Rare LPs do not always contain great music, it’s the cult of the consumer object which creates these artifical prices.
6) Recent tracks, releases or artists that you enjoyed the most ?

There is one disco track on FEED RECORDINGS by DJ KOOL DUST called ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS which i really like. And some Ilija Rudman trancey house track called UMMA. But those a[...]</itunes:summary>

Proverbe selected by James Duncan himself:
Always try to focus on what you can, not what you can’t !!!
James Duncan Interview
What are some of your biggest musical influences?
So many! Lots of house and techno from Detroit, Chicago, NYC, the UK, The EU, old classic disco and boogie, Hip hop guys like Premier, ALC, 9th Wonder, Black Milk, Jazz and funk….just good music basically!
About music making, what kind of inspiration does usually lead your songwriting process?
Well trying to capture a feeling, whether I get that feeling from a record, or a DJ mix or being at a club and trying to capture that feeling onto a track or a record.
I don’t think I have gotten it yet, but I make baby steps to getting closer to capturing the sounds and energy in my head. It’s a long process for me. Something I wish it would come faster alas.
What are you trying to convey through your music? When you’re composing and recording what feelings are you trying to invoke?
The feeling of being at a party and hearing certain sound that captures your ear and hopefully takes you to some other place. For me it’s those little tracks that sometimes people play to move a set in another direction or to contrast another vibe in the music over all that really catch my ear and heart and mind. I always try to convey personal sounds or sounds that I like and try to put them into another context. When I lived in NYC, I always tried to the mix of the sounds of Detroit and Chicago with that energy that only comes from walking the streets of New York City.
It’s hard to put one’s finger on it. And I don’t think I really got it, but like I said, baby steps so many some day I’ll capture it.
In most cases digital sales have overtaken vinyl sales these days. Which do you prefer, vinyl or digital? Do you think vinyl will keep going or disapear eventually?
It’s hard to say. Economics play a big role in whether a format lasts. So while most of the vinyl infrastructure of even a few years ago is now gone, there still is enough of it there to at least get the product out and into peoples hands. For me vinyl and other “physical” formats inherently have a lasting quality to them. That’s not to say that there haven’t been a million bad records made, because there have, but at some point someone went to the effort of actually making it, so that it was now an actual object. I don’t want to get into the argument of what’s better ie: digital music is not as good or whatever, cause there’s a lot of great tracks floating around out there on MP3 only. We tend to forget that dance music has always had a certain aspect of “disposability” to it. I mean in the sense of the fact that people make tracks to grab onto a certain hot trend at a particular moment in time. I think one can look at some old Disco and Italo tracks and see a lot of duplicity based simply on the quickness of getting the tracks to DJs. So when we get wrapped up in the fact that we are trying to make “art”, I think that misses the point of dance music in some ways. That’s not to say there isn’t art in Dance Music. There is, in fact for me, it’s one of the most adventurous areas of music, sonically and structurally, that’s why I got interested in it. But the tracks are there to move people on a dance floor. Not on an iPod. We can’t forget that aspect. Ok, I mean you can and great music will always be great music, but for me at least, the art comes in that overall focus; making something both sonically and emotionally interesting and something that still works over a larger sound system and keeps people moving or lifts them to another place.
Recent tracks or releases that you enjoyed the most ?
Oh man 2009 was crazy good. Almost everything that came my way was great. It’s hard to list, basically all the stuff that came out from people like Jus Ed et al, 6th Borough Project, the Revenge, Omar S.. Eddie, Sushitech.. oh man I cou[...]</itunes:summary>

Thema choosen by Azari 1 III:
It is never too late to be what you might have been.
AZARI & III Interview
Who is Azari & III and how it all began ?
It began winter 08 with an introduction through mutual friends, it quickly became an endless series of studio nights and afternoon email/shrink sessions.
Concerning music making, what sort of inspiration does usually lead your songwriting process?
We will be struck by something we hear out and about, or online, or one of us will have something ringing around in our head and we’ll try to materialize it in the studio. After a few rounds of inspiration and inebriation you get a deft turn of phrase that has a deeper meaning.
Do you always write together or some variation of the two?
We do write together, though some inspiration can come separately and we’ll convene to work it out, try to convince the other that it’s something worth laying down. It’s a duocracy.
What are you trying to convey through your music? When you’re composing and recording what feelings are you trying to invoke in listeners?
We run through an array of feelings and emotions, highs and lows and murky neither here nor theres. We hope to provide an evolving aural experience for the listener, a repetitious groove for the dancer, and an acute vision of hope and despair, love and longing for those who listen into the lyrics.
What was the genesis of Reckless (with your love) ? your last release out on permanent vacation…
The new generation of fearless invincibles who don’t seem to be aware of the travesty of their forerunners. The voice sings to empower itself to break free from the reckless lover, the reckless friends, the reckless abandon of youth. Sometimes, you just got to count your blessings and move on before tragedy ensues.
What can we expect from Azari & III in 2010 ?
Lots of records, shows and remixes.
If Azari & III was a record label, whom artists would you like to work with…
Rhianna? Radioslave, Beyond the Wizards Sleeve, The Field, Kevin Drew, Loving Hand, Frankie Bones…
Each radioshow we make has a proverbe, is there a proverbe you actually like and want to share with us ?
It is never too late to be what you might have been.</itunes:summary>
